Great Day for Green Day fans!

Okay, dating myself by admitting that Green Day first hit it big back when I was a senior in high school. But I loved them then and I still love them now. In the same vein as American Idiot, their new album 21st Century Breakdown is a complete album. You HAVE to listen to it from start to finish. No skipping around. The story told in 3 acts is phenomenal. While it may lack the biting social commentary that had me captivated by American Idiot, their new album is still an amazing punk rock opera for our times. Only the truly great artists are still capable of telling a story over the length of an album, eschewing the "by song" consumption that iTunes has brought into our consumer consciousness.

Breaking with what I said above, one of my favourite songs off the new album comes at the end of the first act. Here they are live, singing Last Night on Earth -

Battlestar actors, directors, producers were invited to speak at the United Nations this past week on the topic of human rights in armed conflict. This clip is of Admiral Adama, the very talented actor and activist, Edward James Olmos. He spoke to the issue of race - are we all distinct races, or are we one human race; why does the use of the term race matter, specifically when talking about human rights?

As Mr. Olmos says, there is but one race - the human race. So say we all!

My Latest Addiction

Hulu - one of the best ways to waste time ... I mean, catch up on all the TV you have missed while completing your homework. And now, they have made sending clips and episodes to friends even easier with their new share function.

Lately I have been watching old Babylon 5 episodes as well as keeping up with Family Guy and the best of Saturday Night Live. Check out the hilarious Hulu ad from the Super Bowl and see if you can stay away. :)

Coraline

Went and saw "Coraline" at the movies last night. It was a typical Tim Burton film. Yet, not. I will admit that when it comes to Burton's films, I either love them or hate them. This was the first to fall inbetween. I would definitely say I liked it ... especially since it was shown in 3D (beware the glasses make everyone look like Buddy Holly). But there was about 15 to 20 minutes, about 2/3 of the way into the movie, that just dragged. Ultimately that was what put it into the "liked it" column, rather than the "loved it" column. I would recommend that if you go see it in 3D, stay until the very end of the credits. You'll understand why when you go.

The Best Frakking Show on TV

If you don't know what the title means, then you haven't been watching Battlestar Galactica.  The show is in the final stretch before signing off for good.  The final episodes have been a welcome return to the raw feeling and intensity of the first season.  Last night's episode "Blood on the Scales" was an incredible end (or was it ...) to the Zarek/Gaeta coup.  Roslin is the president we all wish we had.  And thanks to the gods of Kobol that Lee dropped the wishy-washy politician act and became the soldier he used to be, fighting alongside Starbuck (where he truly belongs).
